How Did Christmas Start?

Winter seasons have always been a time of celebration for every part of the world. Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, the mid-winter was the time to celebrate the birth of the darkest days of the year.

During the start of the 17th century, a religious wave formed that changed the way Christmas was celebrated in Europe. In 1645, Oliver Cromwell and his forces took control over England. However, due to pressure from the mass of people in the country, Christmas was returned as a holiday by Charles II.

Santa Claus has become another part of the Christmas celebration that started in the early fourth century. Santa Claus is based on St. Nicholas who was the patron saint of all sailors and children.

When Dutch settlers came to the new world, they came with a strong belief in St. Nicholas. This resonated with them giving the children small gifts or tokens on December 25th. This tradition slowly became popular and caught on by the rest of the Christmas celebrations around the world. And with years, it evolved into a gift-giving Santa Claus we see today who only give a gift to the children who had been nice to others the previous year.
